Choosing Distinction: Making Room for God’s Presence
A short midweek reflection to carry into your week.
A reflection on how being distinct from the world’s idols opens us to God’s presence.
Scripture
Choosing Distinction in a World of Blending In
“Be careful to be distinct from those who worship other gods”, the phrase lingers from Sunday. It is not a call to withdraw or to build fences, but to recognize how quietly and easily our hearts reach for what everyone around us honors. The question Scott Uselman pressed was not about external difference but about what sets our lives apart as people where God’s presence is welcome.
Ask yourself this week: What makes us distinct, really? Is it a list of rules or something deeper? Distinction, in Scott Uselman’s framing, is not pride or separation for its own sake. It is love that moves us to consider every invitation, a party, an idea, a new habit, with care. The Israelites marked their doors for the Passover. Today, we mark our lives with the quiet choices that point to who is at the center.
The ordinary habits become spiritual ground: What do we celebrate? Whom do we join ourselves to? Where are we casual about things that quietly pull us into compromise? These are not small questions, and there is grace whenever we notice we have drifted. God's presence comes to people ready to invite Him all the way in.
Meditation Focus
Let your attention rest today on this: Distinction is not about what you lack, but about what, and who, you have set your hope upon.
Practical Step
Select one place in your week where you usually go along with the crowd. Choose to pause, pray, and ask, "Does this reflect belonging to Jesus?" Let yourself change course if needed.
Closing Prayer
Holy God, you are faithful beyond our understanding. We set our hearts to honor you above all the invitations and distractions that come. We want your presence more than approval or comfort, so we ask you to help us walk as people marked by your love. Give us wisdom to notice the invitations that would pull us away. Provide steadiness when others do not understand. Forgive our easy compromises and times we have chosen convenience over faithfulness. Lead us away from ways that would numb our hunger for you. Make us a church family where your nearness is real. May all that we do flow from gratitude and hope in you alone. Amen.
