What Would It Look Like if We Were Known as the Church with the Open Door?

When the world gets dark or heavy, are we the place people run toward, or simply drive past? Chuck’s story of the young woman in crisis, a church with doors open all night, a reputation as the place to go when voices get loud or hope feels thin, stays with us. Sometimes the most powerful ministry isn’t what we plan, but what we’re simply available for. The open door is more than unlocked wood and glass. It is a spirit of dedication, a readiness to say yes, even at 2:00 am, when someone needs prayer, or simply not to be alone.

You might hear this and wonder if you’re qualified, or if you have the energy. Ordinary faithfulness is almost always enough. Maybe you’re not called to stay up all night, but perhaps you’re the one who notices, who reaches out, who prays with a hurting neighbor or helps make this church’s welcome known. Dedication is not a single heroic act, it’s the repeated willingness to show up, carry a bit of someone’s burden, and invite God to be present among us.

God, you are the one who welcomes without reservation or fear. You have built this family by grace, not because we were ready or worthy. We praise you for the gift of belonging and for the chance to walk together, side by side. Make us bold enough to say yes to your call to welcome, whether it is an old friend, a stranger, or someone in crisis. Give us what we need to be there for each other: patience, courage, and enough compassion to offer what you have given us. Where we have held back or closed ourselves off, forgive us. Show us the people we overlook, the ways we’ve missed chances to serve. Deliver us from the fear or indifference that keeps us apart. Shape us into a body that reflects your love in visible ways, where even those most in need know they are not alone. Lead us forward together this week, carrying your light into every open door. Amen.
