Seeing Behind the System: Your Lent Wilderness

Remember Pastor Scott’s image of the red pill, not escaping to comfort but waking up to the real world, however hard it feels? The wilderness always looks different on the other side of Sunday. It's quiet, a little frustrating, maybe even lonely. You might find yourself asking: If God loves me, why is this so hard? Why does he seem to lead me out where I’m hungry, tired, and desperate for relief?

This week, the red pill image asks you to sit with that discomfort. Not to solve it instantly, and not to numb yourself. God’s own Son was sent into the hard places right after being called beloved. Is it so strange that we get led there too?

The wilderness isn’t a mistake or a punishment. It’s often where masks come off, and what’s real in your faith shows up. Every hunger, every temptation, every little voice that offers an easier path, the Spirit lets you see it for what it is. But Jesus’ answer wasn’t clever techniques or new philosophies. It was returning, again and again, to words long planted in his heart: “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Let the question come: Where are you being tempted to trade painful truth for something easier? Where do you catch yourself negotiating, if God would just fix this, then I’d trust him? What would it look like for you, this week, to trust God’s Word over your craving for immediate comfort?

Let your prayer and reflection rest here today: What is God inviting me to see or relinquish in my wilderness place right now?

Practical Step

Take fifteen quiet minutes this Wednesday. Choose one hard or nagging area in your life. Open to Matthew 4:1-11 or Psalm 27:1. Read slowly, letting the words settle in. Instead of rehearsing your usual complaint or request, ask God to show you what is really true underneath it all, and sit in silence, even if what you feel is discomfort. If a verse pushes back at your assumptions, write it down, and let that be your companion when temptation returns later in the week.

Prayer

Father above, we enter this week naming you as good and faithful, even when we cannot see around the next bend. We trust that you know our hearts better than we do ourselves, and that your ways are higher and deeper than what we plan. We confess our longing for comfort, and how quickly we try to escape pain or confusion rather than meeting it with your Word. Today, we ask you to provide what we truly need, not what we expect, but what will bring us closer to your purposes. For the ways we have tested you or doubted your love, forgive us. Where the voices of temptation echo in our thoughts, deliver us; make us mindful to stand on the solid ground of your truth. Help us remember that your victory in the wilderness was not just for you, but also for us. Stay near as we walk our own hard paths, and bring our hearts back to honest trust and hopeful obedience.
