Hope That Holds in the Hard Season
A short midweek reflection to carry into your week.
A midweek reflection on how hope can sustain us through times of trauma and loss.
Scripture
Sometimes we wait for life to start when trouble is finally over. But what if God meets us in the middle and offers us life before the trouble ends? This week, think back to Scott Uselman's story, of feeling all washed up, of keeping a running list of everything that went wrong, believing that missing one shot means the whole game is lost.
Jeremiah's people were told something hard: Keep living, working, planting, serving, right in the place that feels all wrong. God did not give them comfort or an escape. He gave them a stubborn hope that they had not lost everything, and that not even exile could keep Him from bringing them home.
You are invited this week to hang on to hope, not as a feeling you work up but as something quiet and present, gifted by God. Hope does not mean pretending, or that pain gets easier overnight. It is what lets you take a small step forward, a task, a prayer, a phone call, an act of responsibility, right in the middle of a season that still hurts.
Meditation focus: Where in your life do you sense God asking you to keep going, even before your circumstances change?
Practical step: Choose one small act of responsibility this week and do it in faith, not for results but as a seed of hope. Let God meet you there.
Prayer:
Father, You are our Maker and the One who brings life out of places I thought were barren. I trust You, though Your ways often feel unfamiliar and hard. Give me whatever I need today, strength when I am tired, wisdom when I feel lost, and hope that holds me together when I feel the weight of my story. Forgive me for the times I turn inward or let pain keep me from loving well. Help me to let go of what I cannot change and deliver me from despair or the temptation to give up. I want to walk with hope because You are still working, even now. Teach me to take up my simple responsibilities and to see them as gifts from Your hand. Shape me through every trial into someone who reflects Your love. Amen.
