Letting God Break the Yoke
A short midweek reflection to carry into your week.
This week's devotional invites us to take Scott Uselman's message on Jeremiah 30 personally: we can admit our distress, trust Jesus to break what binds us, and join the new Exodus toward freedom.
Scripture
Consider the moment Scott Uselman described from his own story, the feeling that two weeks after coming to faith, he had not really changed, that something was wrong, that maybe he was beyond help. Most of us have known some version of that weariness. Maybe you sense it this week. The bond that holds you tight, the worry, a secret pattern you cannot fix, the shame that rises when you remember old habits, that is real distress, even if you have learned to manage on the outside.
Jeremiah 30 reminds us that the people cried out too, and God was not silent. He heard their fear and hopelessness. The good news is not that we finally found the strength, but that God comes close to break the yoke we cannot. You are not asked to save yourself. You are simply invited to bring your need to the surface.
This is the heart of the new Exodus: Jesus does not just forgive, he breaks the hold, sometimes slowly, with a gentle hand; sometimes suddenly, as if a chain dropped to the ground. Every day, the turn begins when we want something different and risk believing that change is possible because of who Jesus is, not because of how strong our will might be.
As you walk into the middle of this ordinary week, ask yourself: Is there anywhere you feel bound, or anywhere you have stopped expecting change? Breathe a prayer, as honestly as you can, for God to break that yoke. This is his promise and consolation to you, even when you are not sure you deserve new freedom yet.
Meditation focus: God is nearer than the bondage that exhausts you, and his rescue is not beyond reach.
Practical step: Today, name quietly to God one place where you feel "stuck", without trying to fix it yourself, and simply ask Jesus to meet you there.
Prayer:
Father, we honor your name for your goodness and your patience with us. You are the one who sees our struggles and does not turn away. We want your will for our lives, even in places we do not yet understand or control, because we trust you to lead us into freedom. Please give us what we need today: wisdom for our choices, courage for our fears, and strength when we feel weak. Forgive us for where we have hidden our need, or tried to handle life alone, and help us to forgive others who are also stumbling forward. As we face anything that tempts or binds us, deliver us, not just from trouble, but from the smallness that keeps us from your love and the freedom you offer. Keep holding us close as your people, and bring this new Exodus into reality in our lives. Amen.
