One Table, One Heart: Letting Go of the Back Door

What would you let go of if you truly belonged?

Think about Pastor Scott’s image, standing at the door of your own life, deciding whether to sneak in the front and slip out the back, keeping a little ‘old life’ behind you, just in case. It’s uncomfortable to ask, but necessary: What is the back door you leave open, even while sitting at the Lord’s table?

The Christian hope is not found in loopholes. It is found in deep, honest belonging. There is relief here: the Lord’s Table is an invitation to tie your heart to Jesus, not as a visitor, but as family. We are asked not just to taste, but to stay. To choose to eat and remain, bound to Him and to the body gathered around us. To choose not to keep an exit route hidden, but to trust Him enough to close the door behind us.

You may worry this means a long list of sacrifices. But what Pastor Scott challenged us to see is that God’s call is not a random test. It is a rescue. The things Jesus rescues us from are the very things that hurt us and those around us most. To belong to Christ is to trust this, to believe not only that He sets you free, but that He invites you to keep walking forward.

Meditation Focus: Let yourself imagine what it would feel like to sit at Christ’s table with nothing left to pull you backward, no secret escape, no old habit held in reserve, nothing shared with the enemy.

Practical Step: Sometime this week, open a drawer, shelf, app, or corner of your home or mind and ask honestly: does anything here belong to the old life? If it does, offer it up, let it go, even if it’s small, as a way to say, "I am His."

Closing Prayer

Father of mercy, you alone are worthy of my whole heart. You made me and you have called me into your life, a place at your table, a family gathered in your name. I adore you for your patience and tenderness, for meeting me each time I come, even when my hands are full of things that do not belong. Teach me, Lord, to want what you want, not just in part of my life but in all of it. Give me wisdom to see where I’m clinging to what you’ve already set me free from, and courage to surrender it. For every place I am tempted, make your presence my way of escape. Provide what I need today, strength to do right, bread for the journey, joy with your people. Forgive me where I have kept secret doors open or defended habits that steal from your peace. Help me to forgive others who struggle in their own letting go. Deliver me from any power that draws me from you. I want to belong to you, Jesus, nothing less and nothing else. Amen.
