What are you most afraid of losing?

Scott pressed us to uncover the real reason we sometimes hold back from obeying Jesus: not just laziness, but fear. Not just a busy life, but self-preservation. He didn’t tell us to stomp out fear on our own, but to see where it’s working in the background, shaping our decisions and priorities. You might catch it surfacing when you hesitate to give because you worry you won’t have enough left, or when you’re tempted to sidestep hard conversations so others will keep liking you.

Jesus looked straight at Peter, whose love was tangled up with fear, and He called it for what it was. He saw the temptation inside even a friend’s good intentions. Today, imagine Jesus saying to you, "You are thinking only about what people care about, not what matters to God." Most days, that challenge is not grand or dramatic, but reveals itself in dozens of small, quiet choices: when you soften or sidestep, hedge your bets, or stay silent so you won't be misunderstood.

Let this be the point you return to all week: Where do your fears of what might be lost drown out what God is asking you to do?

Meditation focus: Ask yourself each morning: Where does fear have more say than Jesus in my day?

Practical step: Choose a simple act this week that feels risky for you in obedience, offering an apology, saying yes to serve, or quietly helping someone in need. Before you act, name your fear in prayer and ask Christ to lead you forward, not your instinct to play it safe.

Prayer

Father, you alone are holy and good beyond what I can see. You set the pattern of surrender through Jesus, who did not let fear or self-preservation rule His steps. Shape my wants beneath your will. When I am tempted to store up safety or listen to fear’s warnings, provide what I truly need: courage to follow, open hands to give, and a heart that trusts you with what is lost or cost. Forgive me for all the times I have let comfort win out over your call. Let mercy be the ground I stand on, not my own record. Teach me to walk alert, to notice the world’s fears whispering in my heart, and to choose mercy and obedience over hesitation. Hold me close, deliver me from the trap of protecting myself first, and let me bear your likeness as your child. Amen.
