Owning Our Part in the Crowd

When You See Yourself in the Crowd

It’s easy, reading the passion story, to distance ourselves from the crowd that shouted for Jesus’s crucifixion or from Pilate who tried to avoid responsibility. But Pastor Scott asked us on Sunday: what if we saw a bit of ourselves in each of them? What if the difference between a spectator and a participant is simply admitting we’re not as different from them as we’d like to think?

You may not be in a shouting mob. But in a quiet moment this week, can you remember a time you excused a harsh word or wrote off a selfish choice as something 'everyone does'? Maybe it was easier to blame someone else, or dismiss the pain with, "I forgive myself," instead of owning it with another person or with God. Pilate’s washing of his hands offered no real freedom. The crowd’s chant was loud, but it did nothing to heal their hearts.

Sit with this: are there places, even small ones, where you’ve tried to justify or dismiss rather than bring your need to Jesus? Honest repentance doesn’t add to our shame, it brings us back to relationship. And as Pastor said, that is where real change begins, and where healing comes, not from self-acquittal but from admitting, "Lord, I need your mercy." We bring what we cannot fix, and find that grace comes to people who stop making excuses and simply come home.

Meditation Focus: Where am I tempted to wash my hands and move on, rather than confess and turn to grace?

Practical Step: Choose one moment this week when you are tempted to justify yourself or dismiss a wrong. Pause and speak, either out loud or in prayer, "I am not innocent, I need forgiveness, and I trust Jesus to be enough."

Prayer

Holy God, you see each heart and know us fully. You are faithful, patient, and just. We come in awe of your love shown when Jesus stood silent under judgment for our sake. May your will be done, not ours, we confess our need for your mercy and ask you to shape our desires to match yours. For every place we try to earn our own innocence or brush aside the pain we have caused, we ask not for our own way, but your true forgiveness. We depend on your provision for grace, for courage to confess, and for strength to live in honesty with those around us. Where we have hurt others or dismissed our part, help us seek and offer real peace. Deliver us from the easy paths of self-justification or pride. Keep us close to your heart, walking humbly and resting in your kindness. Amen.
