When God Lets Us Have Our Way
A short midweek reflection to carry into your week.
Reflect on what it means to insist on our will over God’s and how to turn back toward trust.
Scripture
One image from Sunday stays with us: an impatient people asking God for what they want until He finally says yes, even while knowing it will not go well. You might recognize the feeling in your own story, the moments when you pushed and bargained for your way, ignoring quiet warnings or wise counsel. Maybe you, like Israel, have wanted a shortcut, a leader, a certainty other than what God offers. Maybe it even seemed like answered prayer, only later to reveal a deeper ache or a burden you did not foresee.
What does it mean for you, this week, to truly trust God when His answer is not what you want? Have you ever looked back and been grateful that God did not give you some things you demanded? Or do you carry the weight of a time when He let you have your way, and now you wish you had listened?
The heart of faith is not about getting our way. It is about coming to trust that God loves us enough to let us choose, even knowing the cost. Sometimes, learning the hard lesson is how we become open for new mercy.
Focus for meditation: Where am I resisting God’s wisdom because I trust my own understanding more?
Practical step: Take time in prayer this week to name any place in your life where you’ve pushed for your will over God’s. Ask God for courage to let go and to trust His goodness, even if it means surrendering something you still want.
Prayer: Father, You are holy, wise, and generous. There is no rival to Your goodness or Your grace. We honor You as the one who sees what we cannot, who holds the world and our days. We offer our longings, our frustrations, and our stubbornness, trusting that Your will is better than ours. Give us what we need today, not just in bread or shelter, but in changed hearts willing to receive Your guidance. Forgive us for every moment we rushed ahead and demanded our way, for putting our trust in other things or people instead of You. Set us free from the burdens we have chosen and deliver us from the traps of our own making. Lead us into deeper trust, so our lives reflect Your care and courage in this world. Amen.
