When Your Children Ask

There’s a moment Pastor Scott described, one every parent or mentor knows by heart: the question from a watching child. Sometimes it comes right as you slip a gift into an offering plate, sometimes when you stop to help a neighbor. Sometimes it is a look, not words, but it is just as piercing: Why do we do this? Can we really afford it?

You feel the weight of the moment, not just in what’s given, but in what it shows about who you are and who you trust. It’s easy to offer explanations about sharing and kindness, but at the heart, what we are teaching is dependence. Not on luck or self-sufficiency, but on a God who gives us breath, daily bread, and each undeserved mercy.

The children in our lives won’t remember every Sunday school answer. But they will remember the times when we gave, not from leftover comfort, but with a quiet prayer and a trembling trust. They will see whether our giving costs us something, and whether our words about God echo in how we live. In those moments, you introduce them to a living faith, a faith dependent on the One who provides first, last, and always.

Identify one area this week where giving will cost you something, money, time, pride, comfort. Invite your children (or a younger person in your life) into it with you, not for show but to share honestly why you do it and what you trust God to provide.

Prayer

Father, you are the giver of every good thing, the one who brought us out of places we could not have left on our own. You are faithful to provide what we need and more. We want our lives to honor you, not just in songs or words, but in the choices we make when no one is looking, especially when little eyes are watching. Teach us to trust you again, to give as freely as your grace has come to us. Forgive us for the times we have forgotten who we are without you, and for letting comfort close our open hands.

Lead us to depend on you in the quiet places, and make our homes places where your love is seen and remembered. Give us enough for today, strength to serve, humility to ask for help, and softness to forgive others and ourselves. Guard us from bitterness, fear, and pride. Keep our hearts open and our witness true, so those coming after us may know your goodness for themselves. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
