Faith When You Are Left Waiting

A short midweek reflection to carry into your week.

Part of the message: Surprised By God

A devotional invitation to trust God even when his answers empower others while leaving our own prayers unanswered.

Scripture

Sometimes we are surprised by God in the way that truly tests us: we watch another person receive the healing, the blessing, or the comfort that we have poured our own prayers into seeking. John the Baptist, sitting in prison, received word of widows' sons being raised and outsiders being welcomed. The miracles were real, but they were not for him. You may know this place, the feeling of watching God work wonders for others, while your own sorrow remains unhealed and your trial unresolved.

Scott Uselman named this dynamic in his sermon. There is a kind of faith that grows only when we, like John, are left to wait while others receive. This is not the easy faith of celebrating when our prayers are answered, but the deeper faith of taking heart in what God is doing for others, even as our own heart aches. It is the faith of not stumbling over Jesus when he disappoints our expectations, and of believing the kingdom is still good news, even when we're not the main character of the story that day.

If today you find yourself watching God's work from the sidelines, let John's honest question be your companion: Are you the one, or should I expect another? And let Jesus' answer settle somewhere deeper than quick comfort: "Tell John what you see, the blind see, the poor receive good news." In those moments, God asks us to have faith not only for ourselves, but for the unfolding of grace in every life around us.

Meditation focus:

This week, notice where you feel disappointment as God acts for someone else. Let that disappointment become a prayer for faith that rejoices with others in their answered prayers, even as you wait.

A practical step:

Take a moment each day to name someone who has received what you are longing for, a healing, a reconciliation, a sign of hope. Pray for them by name and ask God to increase your joy in their blessing, without diminishing your honest grief or hope for your own.

Prayer

God, you are good and you act in ways I do not always expect. Thank you for your unfailing wisdom and mercy. I yield to your ways, even when I do not understand them. You know my needs and the hunger in my heart, and you do not belittle my tears. Where faithfulness leads me into seasons of waiting, provide your presence as daily bread. Forgive my jealousy, my doubt, and my attempts to bargain with you. Help me bless and not resent those whose prayers have been answered differently. Keep me true, even in disappointment, and make me ready to choose faith and hope again, no matter the outcome. Let your grace be enough and your kingdom come, through me and beyond me. Amen.
