From Now On: Saying Yes in the Ordinary
A short midweek reflection to carry into your week.
A closer look at what "from now on" means when Jesus interrupts our ordinary choices and labors.
Scripture
When the Ordinary Becomes Sacred
Imagine Simon Peter cleaning his nets after another hard, fruitless night. It is here, elbows deep in disappointment, that Jesus asks for something that makes little practical sense, to let down the nets again, right where failure just stung. Most of us know what it means to labor and feel it’s all for nothing.
But what if, just like Simon, you heard Jesus’ voice in the middle of your everyday routine? What if "from now on" could begin in the very place you already stand?
Scott Uselman’s sermon invited us to notice when the ordinary tasks, the recycled efforts and daily disappointments, become moments for Jesus to reveal himself as the true source. Jesus does not call Peter after a night of easy success but after difficult, repeated work. Your own "from now on" may be waiting in the small acts of faithfulness, the places you are tired, or where you keep showing up out of duty rather than hope. The turn comes not when everything changes on our timeline, but when we hear his invitation and say, "Because you say so."
Meditation Focus: Jesus meets us at the place of our disappointment, inviting us to listen for his direction and trust that his word gives our labor meaning.
A Step for Today: Pause this week before any small or thankless task. Offer it to Jesus with an open heart. Pray, "From now on, I give even this to you. Show me where you are present in what I am doing."
Closing Prayer: God, you are worthy of every praise and more than all our efforts. We honor you as the giver of all that is good and the source of hope after every long night. Help us want your way even when our own strength fails. We offer today’s work and struggles to you, asking your will to shape our choices, our words, and even our disappointments. Give us what we need: grace in our lack, patience in uncertainty, wisdom for decisions, and hearts that are soft to your leading. Where we have missed your presence or turned away in pride, forgive us with your gentleness. Help us let go of what no longer brings life. Lead us from habits that do not serve your love or our neighbor. Keep us alert to your invitation in every ordinary place. Stay close, deliver us from fear and discouragement, and teach us to walk each day in newness. Amen.
