When Following Costs Us: Becoming a New Wineskin
A short midweek reflection to carry into your week.
Reflecting on how being associated with Jesus may bring discomfort or exclusion, and how to choose openness to God's new work in everyday life.
Scripture
Sometimes the hardest part about being associated with Jesus is not believing in him, it is being willing to be seen with him when it costs us. Maybe you’ve felt it: people look at you differently at school or work, they laugh under their breath, or it is just easier to keep quiet than to risk being the odd one out. Scott Uselman’s story of praying on the line at the book factory, feeling his boss’s eyes on him, brings the question close to home: Are we willing to be new wineskins, even when it means standing apart?
There is both grace and challenge in Jesus’ parable about new wine and new wineskins (Luke 5:37-38). New wine needs a vessel that can stretch, give, and risk being reshaped; the old cannot contain the new. In our ordinary week, this might look like showing kindness to the neighbor others ignore. It might mean refusing to join in when coworkers gossip about someone at the margins. It could simply be letting go of comfort or status so that you are free for God’s new work in someone’s life.
Jesus never asks us for more than he gives, but he does ask us to let go of what we know, so he can fill us with something better. Sometimes, like the disciples, we fear making a mistake, will associating with Jesus cost us too much? In the end, the choice is to carry shame or let it go, and to let ourselves be filled fresh instead.
Meditation Focus:
Where are you being nudged this week to be a new wineskin, open to God’s new thing, even if it costs you? Sit with this and do not rush past discomfort. New wine stretches the vessel.
Practical Step:
Before Friday, do one gentle thing to reach out to someone who is usually overlooked, in church, in the break room, in your family, or online. Let it simply be presence, not a project.
Closing Prayer:
God, you are holy and full of mercy, and your welcome reaches further than I can imagine. I want what you want for me and those around me, even when it means releasing my grip on what is familiar. Give what is needed for today, whether it is courage to stand up, or humility to step back, or trust to try again. Forgive where I have let fear or pride keep me from associating with those you love. Forgive the times I have tried to hide my faith instead of letting it show. Lead me away from old habits that close me off, and teach me to be a vessel open to your Spirit and your new work. Help me walk with you and for you in each ordinary moment. Amen.
